This tube is used to discharge the pleural area.

 Some materials such as air (pneumothorax), blood (hemo-thorax), pus (empyema) or fluid (pleural effusion) accumulate in pleura in certain pathologic conditions. They press against the lungs and cause respiratory disorders. If the amount of those materials is excessive, they will cause hemodynamic disorders that may be life threatening.
